Juror’s Statement
Beyond The Beaten Path
The focus of this exhibition interested me, as my art practice has taken me “beyond the beaten path,” to many remote locations in our country via the Artist in Residence Program in our National Parks and Forests. But I sometimes need to be reminded that our New England coast is a landscape rich for exploration. This was reflected, sometimes literally, in the entries to this exhibition. Rather than show us unfamiliar landscapes, the artists have made the familiar intriguing, suggesting that we take a more exploratory look at the beauty that surrounds us.
The following artists were selected for Honor of Mention, as I found their imagery beautiful and somewhat mysterious, which suggested that creating their work took them Beyond the Beaten Path.
Evening Tree - Donna Parker - Photography
The composition of a simple subject is full of energy and movement. The upper branches compose a circular border that keeps the eye returning to the deeper space in the middle.
In The Forest - Donna Parker - Photography
The color and texture in this image is very beautiful. It appears to be a sort of fantasy forest, the shallow space and lack of sky suggests an enclosed and private place.
Meandering - Helen Hawkins - Photography
While a simple glass vessel on a shelf, the reflections suggest a globe or the ocean. The lone figure could be coming towards, or going away from us, on a journey or returning.
Choosing New Beginnings - Al Bates Lombard - Hand-dyed fabric collage
The patterns suggest handcrafted textiles, which could be discovered while exploring other cultures. The variety of birds suggest the variety of adaptations to the different environments in our world.
I was honored to be trusted as the juror for this exhibition. Thank you to the Exhibition Committee for giving me this opportunity.
