Rogers Free Library Awards Museum Grant for Climate Change Exhibit

Mt. Hope Students to Express their Interpretation of the Effects of Climate Change on the Local Community

The Bristol Art Museum expresses its appreciation to the Rogers Free Library for a generous grant it awarded to sponsor an exhibit titled Only One Earth - Only One Rhode Island: Our Environment Through Our Students' Eyes. The exhibit will be comprised of high school students’ artistic expressions of climate change’s threat to coastal communities and is scheduled to open to coincide with Earth Day 2022.

The award was made available under the Library’s Community Grant Program and will enhance the educational component of the Library’s mission. Specifically, the Museum will engage the Mount Hope High School Art Department to develop a public exhibit of mixed-medium artwork created by students examining pressing environmental challenges such as climate change and its past, present and pending impact on coastal communities.

“Climate change is traditionally interpreted as a scientific matter, but this exhibit will provide a venue to showcase the artwork of young adults to express their observations and offer a different perspective to raise awareness and educate the community on an issue of widespread concern,“ said Museum Board Chair Andy Tyska. “Community outreach programs with public/private partners are integral to the Museum’s goal of engaging the local community in the art of our time and encouraging the creative being in all age groups. The Bristol Art Museum expresses its gratitude to the Rogers Free Library for recognizing the value of this community exhibit and is grateful for their generous support.”

The Community Grant Program provides “an opportunity for community groups, organizations, clubs or individuals to receive funding for programs and services that explicitly demonstrate a connection with Rogers Free Library and provide a significant benefit to either the Library’s patrons or the Bristol community.”

The exhibit has three specific goals:
  1. Engage Mt Hope High School students in a discussion of the current state of the natural geography and natural resources of our coastal community, with a focus on the impact of conservation, preservation, climate change, and pollution;
  2. Provide a forum to express students’ observations and concerns through artistic media, including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, and fabric; and
  3. Showcase student artwork in a public venue offered in partnership with the Rogers Free Library.

The exhibit will challenge students to employ a mixed-use of media to visualize past and current impacts to the state’s environment, solutions to alter the effects of climate, environmental challenges, and visions of an altered environment. The endeavor will conclude with a juried exhibit of the students’ works in the library’s public space.

The Bristol Art Museum will encourage students to avail themselves of the Library’s vast resources to research variations in the local community’s environment and its impact on individuals, businesses, buildings, and geography. This research is intended to inform the creative process of their artwork. The Library has committed to developing reading lists and scheduling a slate of guest speakers who will contribute their expertise to the student participants and community members. The exhibit will also introduce students to the value of the Library and also showcase their artwork.
  • BLM - The Board of Directors of the Bristol Art Museum mourn the senseless death of George Floyd and all the victims of racial injustice. The Board actively supports efforts to bridge racial disparities, to reject racism, and to work toward making Bristol a much more culturally rich and inclusive community through the arts. The Board believes art fosters learning, contemplation, and critical discourse; it recognizes positive change is achieved through active engagement with the town and residents. Change happens when communities work together to achieve common goals. Therefore, Bristol Art Museum is committed to developing exhibits and programs around equity, respect, and compassion. These are the organization's guiding principles and touchstones for moving forward.
