Bristol Art Museum Presents a National Exhibition
When in the Course of Human Events…
Featuring works by 65 artists from across the nation, with a special spotlight on
Rhode Island artist Susan Hardy-Twaddell.
On View Sunday February 22 – Friday, April 10, 2026
In honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States, the Bristol Art Museum presents When in the Course of Human Events...
The exhibition was juried by Meredith Stern, a printmaker, publisher, and socially engaged artist. Her work has been featured in large-scale installations nationally and internationally, and is included in the collections of the Library of Congress, RISD Museum, MoMA, and the Obama Presidential Museum.
This exhibition invites artists to reflect on what follows the iconic opening line of the Declaration of Independence, exploring what it means to experience human events in our contemporary world.

ARTIST TALK:
With Susan Hardy Sunday, March 29 — 2:00 PM
|
|
Join us at the Bristol Art Museum on Sunday, March 29 at 2:00 PM for a special artist talk with Rhode Island artist Susan Hardy, the featured regional artist in our current national exhibition.
Hardy will speak about her powerful body of work and her explorations on themes of history, memory, and cultural identity, often emerging from found objects and materials that carry traces of lived experience. On view is her series Middle Passage as well artwork inspired from “Lost and Found” a black rag doll, transforming a simple object into a reflection on deeper cultural narratives. |
