Think you can't draw a face? Think again!
Let's approach the human face as a map to create portraiture that is in equal parts readable and abstracted. Through music, clay, and intuitive materials, you'll explore aspects of self while staying loose – letting imagination and expression guide your hand. This immersive 2-day workshop is a journey into the art of self-portraiture, spiritual imagery, and/or fantasy figures, inviting you to release attachment to outcomes and embrace authentic expression. In an intimate setting with a maximum of 12 artists, you'll work in a relaxed and comfortable environment where creativity flows freely. Music-guided sessions will inspire a fluid approach, whether you're a hesitant beginner or an experienced artist. Together, we'll "Embrace the Face" and allow your unique vision to emerge, celebrating the beauty of artistic exploration and personal discovery. IG: @Suzanne_OShea_Art |

Pysanky (pee-san-key) are decorated eggs created by using a wax resist (similar to batik) method with traditional folk motifs and designs. In this workshop, students will learn how to draw on a whole plain white chicken egg with a special pen (kistka) and melted wax, then dye the egg with special dyes. The drawing and dyeing are repeated several times as each layer of the design is applied until the egg is finished at which time the egg is blown out, the wax removed, and a ribbon is threaded through. The students will receive an egg to work on and a kistka to use. They will share the dyes and other supplies. They will also receive a short history of Pysanky, instructions with an explanation of the process, motifs and pictures for design inspiration, an explanation of the caring for the completed egg, and a container in which to take the egg home. Our teacher, Hanka Robertson, was born in Slovenia and, as a child, learned to make Pysanky from her mother who was born and grew up in the former Czechoslovakia where making Pysanky every Eastertime was a tradition. Making Pysanky became Hanka’s tradition too. The workshop lasts 2 hours and starts promptly at the scheduled time. Children aged 8 and over are welcome. Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a participating adult.

Join Providence-based artist Kim Arthurs in a hands-on cyanotype workshop. A cyanotype is a historical, alternative photographic blueprint process that uses ultraviolet light-sensitive iron salts, producing a negative of an object or image through contact-printing, typically using sunlight as the source of exposure, and developing the image in water. In this workshop, students will learn the history and science of the cyanotype, and make their own 5"x7" (x2) cyanotype print. The first 5"x7" print will be pre-treated with cyanotype solution by Kim, and ready to be printed in this workshop. The second 5"x7" print will be blank, and treated with cyanotype solution by the student during the workshop for them to make a second print on their own at home after this workshop. Students will have access to an assortment of locally foraged botanicals to choose from for their cyanotype print, and are welcome to bring their own botanicals/materials to create their composition. Students will first create their composition on a pre-treated 5"x7" paper, print their cyanotype using an ultraviolet light, wash their print, and let their print dry. Once dry, the cyanotype print is complete and archived. Next, students will learn how to treat their own paper with cyanotype solution. Students will then have a new 5"x7" cyanotype that is ready to be printed with whenever they are ready to make their second print at home, after this workshop.

Creating a painting from the general idea to the specific idea. It's not what you paint as much as how you paint it. It's not how much color you use as much as how you use it.
In this workshop, we will study the mechanics of form organization and how it applies to designing a composition for painting. Brushwork, building form and color, and discussing different palettes you can use to achieve a better painting will be the subjects covered.

Intro to Kinstugi (Japanese pottery repair) with Quantum Wei

POSTPONED TO SPRING 2025
Fee: $65 Members/ $75 Non-Members

Kintsugi is the Japanese tradition of pottery repair. In this art, broken pieces are reassembled, and cracks are highlighted rather than hidden. When joined with the traditional urushi lacquer, repairs can take weeks or even months as each curing step can require 2-7 days in the muro (a humid curing box). In this class, we will use a quick-cure epoxy, allowing you to go home at the end of the day with a final piece. This is a nice way to get started since urushi lacquer is so time-intensive - and slightly hazardous!
Quantum first started practicing Kintsugi in 2021 when he wanted to fix a broken souvenir plate (two pieces, epoxy + liquid gold leaf). Since then, he has ventured deeper into the art by working on more complex breaks and utilizing traditional materials (urushi lacquer), and constructing a muro (wooden curing box). During his latest trip to Japan, he took a workshop with kintsugi master David Pike.
