Watercolor is a transparent medium, and mastering negative painting is key to creating depth and dimension. In this session, students will explore how to make lighter elements stand out by applying darker hues around them. We'll also demonstrate techniques for softening and 'losing' edges, seamlessly blending them into the background for a more natural and integrated look. This lesson will focus on using masking fluid to preserve the white areas of the painting, allowing washes to flow freely without affecting the main subject. Students will gradually build up the painting using various techniques such as salt application, scraping, and dry brushing to create texture and depth. For class information or questions, email: [email protected]. |
Using a limited palette is crucial to prevent a painting from becoming muddled or unclear. In this lesson, we’ll explore how to mix transparent and opaque pigments while developing a cohesive color palette to create a warm, vibrant winter scene. Many artists rely on photographs as references for their paintings, but photos often fail to translate directly into compelling artworks. This is because photographs are flat, two-dimensional, and monoscopic—captured through a single lens, lacking the depth and dimension we naturally perceive with two eyes.
Unlike a camera, we see the world stereoscopically, with depth and spatial relationships. The challenge for an artist is to transform the flat, two-dimensional photo into a three-dimensional image on the canvas. The photo serves as a starting point—a reference to visual reality—but it remains optical. The painting, on the other hand, is conceptual.
In this workshop, we’ll explore how to use photos as tools to enhance and develop a creative vision for the canvas. Instead of being constrained by the “freeze-dried” reality of a photograph, we will focus on building a strong conceptual framework for the painting before the brush ever touches the canvas.
By learning to bridge the gap between the optical and the conceptual, you’ll discover how to bring depth, dimension, and creativity to your artwork. This is the essence of the workshop.
Materials List coming soon.

Intro to Kinstugi (Japanese pottery repair) with Quantum Wei

POSTPONED TO SPRING 2025
Fee: $65 Members/ $75 Non-Members
Kintsugi is the Japanese tradition of pottery repair. In this art, broken pieces are reassembled, and cracks are highlighted rather than hidden. When joined with the traditional urushi lacquer, repairs can take weeks or even months as each curing step can require 2-7 days in the muro (a humid curing box). In this class, we will use a quick-cure epoxy, allowing you to go home at the end of the day with a final piece. This is a nice way to get started since urushi lacquer is so time-intensive - and slightly hazardous!
Quantum first started practicing Kintsugi in 2021 when he wanted to fix a broken souvenir plate (two pieces, epoxy + liquid gold leaf). Since then, he has ventured deeper into the art by working on more complex breaks and utilizing traditional materials (urushi lacquer), and constructing a muro (wooden curing box). During his latest trip to Japan, he took a workshop with kintsugi master David Pike.

This is a BYOP class - Bring Your Own Pottery to repair. Keep it simple (7 pieces or less) so that you will have enough time to fix your piece.
