Breadth and Depth: Earth, Water, Air, Fire is a national juried exhibit that challenges conventional boundaries, inviting artists to create artwork that expresses ideas about the natural world. It’s an idyllic region of New England where hundreds of artists choose to live and work. Reflections of an Inner Life: The Art of Peter Strickman
On view Saturday June 8 – Saturday July 20, 2024
Peter Strickman (1946-2017) was an artist whose work encompassed the poetry of both the natural and spiritual worlds. Born in Fall River, Massachusetts, Strickman was a brilliant student who, following his junior year of high school, was accepted at Marlboro College in Vermont. After several years of intense study and painting under the influence of instructor Frank Stout, Strickman graduated and embarked on a solo career. With a deft hand and a discerning eye, he embraced a multitude of subjects and styles. His joyful landscapes are often a blur of verdant foliage and azure waterways. A darker mood emerges in the artist’s still life and figurative paintings. Strickman had numerous exhibitions and sold many works. However, at the age of thirty, Peter Strickman withdrew to an inner life, leaving “painting and color behind,” as he wrote. Inspired by the teachings of Zen Buddhism, he then created a body of lyrical ink drawings. Strickman’s “beloved sister, Bonnie,” has been the caretaker for her brother’s remaining work, which has been the genesis for this exhibition.
Look Harder, See More
On view Sunday July 28 –Saturday Sept 14, 2024
Participating Artists
Elizabeth de Bethune, Stephen Fisher, M. Benjamin Herndon, Rebecca Hutchinson
Denis Leonti, Jesse Thompson, Christopher T. Terry, Gilbert Travers
Look Harder, See More invites viewers to embark on a journey of discovery. In a society dominated by quick looks and superficial interpretations, this exhibition encourages deeper engagement with art. From hyper-realistic intricacies that demand close scrutiny to minimalist forms that challenge conventional perception, Look Harder, See More urges audiences to transcend the obvious and uncover the hidden depths of artistic expression.
In the realm of hyper-realism, artists meticulously render scenes and subjects with observational precision. Conversely, abstract minimalism strips away extraneous elements to distill essence and evoke contemplation, and figurative works offer glimpses into the human experience.
Within these varied approaches lies a common thread: the power of art to provoke thought, evoke emotion, and ignite imagination. As you navigate this exhibition, I encourage you to linger, to explore, and to allow yourself to be captivated by the stories woven into each artwork. Look Harder, See More, will inspire curiosity, provoke contemplation, and awaken a deeper appreciation for the power of art.
Visions
BAM Members’ Juried Biennial Exhibition
On View: Sunday, November 3 – Friday, November 29, 2024
As I reviewed the work that was selected, I came away impressed by the variety of media and genre that was presented as well as how each artist communicated their own personal vision through their work. For me, this exhibit in total represents three obvious elements: texture, design and the ability to tell a story. Some were very reflective in content while others made me smile. There were still others that made me want to learn more about the artist and his/her process. In the end, I believe and I hope you agree, this is a strong exhibit that shows a breadth of work by artists from across the state and beyond. Juror's notes: Nancy Gaucher-Thomas

The exhibition Praxis: Abstraction; 4 Strategies brings together four artists working in a variety of approaches. Essential underlying themes are space, place and time. From Michael Rich’s reflections on place, to Lloyd Martin’s observations of the architectural incident, to Ron Ehrlich’s current exploration of time and duration, to Rustermier's examinations of fundamental shapes and their formed relationships in ambiguous space, the artists exhibiting here are all engaged in expressing ideas through form, shape, color and line. In this way, using a variety of visual languages, a dialogue is established through the basic vocabulary of abstraction.
